This Drink Could Protect You From Skin Cancer

The sun is the biggest culprit in causing skin cancer, but there’s a beverage that may thwart some of the tumor-causing effects of ultraviolet rays

You may grab a cup (or two) of coffee every morning to help you wake up and face the day, but you may also be doing your skin a favor. Researchers in a new paper released Tuesday say that coffee can protect against melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer.

New treatment strategy for aggressive cancers identified

The study, published in Science, details how disrupting a pathway used by cancerous cells to proliferate could be the key to inhibiting the growth and survival of tumors. 

"Identification of genetic markers that predict cancer cell vulnerabilities and new drugs to exploit such vulnerabilities is a focal point of cancer research today," says senior author Lee Zou, associate scientific director of the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) Cancer Center.

Two thirds of Cancer Cases down to 'bad luck,' New Study Claims

 Last year saw more than 1.6 million new cancer cases diagnosed in the US. While environmental and genetic factors are known to drive cancer development, a new study by researchers from the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center in Baltimore, MD, claims two thirds of cancer cases in adults are a result of "bad luck."
